FRESNO, Calif. — Fresno police have charged and taken into custody an off-duty Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent accused of assaulting a woman and her 72-year-old father after he was found sleeping on their front lawn early Friday morning. The incident, in which the father shot the agent once in self-defense, has drawn local attention amid ongoing ICE activity in the area.
VIDEO REPORT
According to the Fresno Police Department, officers responded around 3:19–3:20 a.m. on October 9, 2026, to multiple 911 calls and a ShotSpotter activation reporting a single gunshot near East Dudley Avenue and North Broadway Street in the Tower District. They found 32-year-old David Gonzalez of Texas, an off-duty ICE agent, already in handcuffs with a gunshot wound to his midsection/stomach.
Police said a resident returned home and discovered Gonzalez asleep on her front lawn. She alerted her 72-year-old father, who lives with her. The father went outside and woke Gonzalez to ask him to leave. Gonzalez appeared intoxicated and agitated, then allegedly assaulted the father, forcing him to the ground and causing several visible injuries. When the daughter tried to intervene, Gonzalez allegedly attacked her as well, causing her to fall to the ground. Fearing for their safety, the father produced a legally owned firearm and fired one shot, striking Gonzalez. The daughter’s boyfriend, an off-duty police officer, arrived shortly afterward and placed Gonzalez in handcuffs.
