Tucker Collins, an 18-year-old USC freshman studying astronautical engineering, lost his right eye after being struck by a less-lethal projectile on March 28, 2026, while documenting a “No Kings” protest outside the Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown Los Angeles.
His attorney, V. James DeSimone, stated that a DHS agent fired the projectile, which destroyed the eye and fractured the socket; the eye was surgically removed. Collins and his lawyers filed a federal tort claim seeking $100 million, alleging assault, battery, and civil-rights violations. This was reported by CNN, the Los Angeles Times, ABC7, the Daily News, USC’s Daily Trojan, and others in April 2026.
